Rishikesh – Yoga Capital of the World

Rishikesh is a holy city in the foothills of the Himalayas. It has been a place of great importance in Hinduism and a prominent place of worship for the saints and the seekers. The city became even more famous after, in the 8th century CE, Adi Shankaracharya had built several temples and ashrams in the area. Later the place came to be a starting point for pilgrimages to the four Himalayan sanctuaries Chota Char Dham. After the visit of the Beatles, a popular rock band, to the Maharishi Mahesh Ashram in the late 1960s, Rishikesh became more visible on the map and since then became known, as the Yoga Capital of the World.

Rishikesh is the first city to be touched in its very heart by the great river Ganges, right after it flows down the Himalayas. The river, which is worshipped in India as a goddess and a mother, is still cold here, colored in rich malachite green of the mountain minerals. Every year millions and millions come to perform sacred ablution in the healing waters of the holy river, and to take part in the Ganga Aarti ceremony. Two hanging bridges across the Ganges, Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula, are notable symbols of the city.

In today’s Rishikesh new yoga schools are springing up like mushrooms; the city hosts international yoga and film festivals, classical Indian music concerts, everyday Ganga Aarti ceremonies and so much more. Yoga practitioners from all over the world come here to experience the holiness and beauty of this place. Many of them return here annually, and every time Rishikesh opens up to them in a new light. Some guests are visiting their beloved teachers; others are on yoga tours or attending festivals or yoga teacher trainings. Most of them return home happily after receiving their certificates at the end of the course, but there are some who have left their hearts here.
